Staying Sober While Traveling Solo

Traveling solo can be an amazing and freeing experience, and it can also come with its own set of challenges, especially when you’re committed to staying alcohol-free. Solo travel can feel both empowering and a bit intimidating. Here are some tips and advice to help you stay sober and prioritize self-care while exploring new destinations.

Travel with Intention

This is my thing.

Do Your Homework: Spend time researching your destination, look for accommodations that aren’t party-focused and email them beforehand asking to remove any alcohol from the fridge.

Stay Flexible: Plan a mix of things to do that keep you excited - whether it’s hiking, visiting museums, hitting up a yoga or cooking class, having a variety of options will help you stay engaged and present.

Stay Connected

Regular Check-Ins: Keep you in touch with friends & family about your travels. I usually give a couple friends a heads up that I’ll be traveling for x amount of day and would love additional TLC during that time. Sharing your experiences with people who love and know you can be encouraging.

Self-Care Is a Necessity

Morning Routine: If you like to have a daily routine, try to keep it consistent while you travel. Whether it’s a morning walk, a workout, or a nice breakfast, starting your day with intention will help promote your physical and mental well-being.

Essentials for Packing: Bring items that help you relax and unwind. It doesn’t necessarily need to be all of your crystals or 8 tarot decks, though. I would be lying if I said I never did this. But bring items that make you feel relaxed: an essential oil roller, a journal, maybe a nice notebook.

HYDRATION IS KEY: Enough said.

Socializing Sober

Practice Makes Perfect: Be prepared to handle questions about your sobriety with confidence. Simple phrases like “No thank you.” or “I’m just having water today, thanks though!” can wor wonders. More to come on this.

BYOLC: That sounds for, bring your own La Croix. If you’re into that. Otherwise, bring something that makes you happy - kombucha, iced tea, water, juice, heck, chocolate milk. I actually might do that next week.

Find Fun Spots: You can find cute cafes, tea houses, or juice bars that provide an energetic atmosphere without alcohol.

Reflection & Reward - the new R&R

Journal: Document your journey, noting the highs and the lows. Reflecting on your experiences can provide insights into your true self.

Celebrate Good Times: Acknowledge all of your achievements, no matter how small. Treat yourself to something special, like a spa day, or a nice dinner.

Alcohol-free while traveling solo is about self-care, mindfulness, and having fun. By planning intentionally, staying connected, and prioritizing yourself, you can create a fulfilling travel experience that supports your alcohol-free lifestyle. Embrace the adventure, explore new places, and celebrate the incredible journey in this beautiful life.
